John Schuman & The Vagabond Crew - Australia At War, plus Redgum and Beyond.
Part 1 (1 hour) - Australia At War - In words and music, by John Schuman and the Vagabond Crew. A performance of songs linked by a moving and evocative narratice conprising newspaper reports, poems, letters from the front and sober reflections. A dignified and very respectful commemoration.
“Sensational songs, great playing, tight, classy – this band is absolutely international standard. They remind us of what it really means to be Australian – and John Schumann is the consummate frontman.” Australians of all ages are familiar with John's song 'I was only 19'.
Followed by Part 2 (45 mins) - Redgum & Beyond. A show not to be missed.
“John Schumann is one of the very few songwriters who has changed the way a nation thinks.”
“John Schumann helped bring our Vietnam veterans home – and he is the only songwriter to have his words inscribed on a national memorial.” “Schumann showed us that Australian people like hearing songs about themselves and their places in their accent. And he was doing this long, long before it was fashionable. In fact, he made it fashionable.”
“Beyond Redgum, Schumann has gone on as a solo artist to show that all the talents and attributes of Redgum’s free-and-easy leader have translated into the older, mature performer who not only continues to make the pace in music and lyrics but has become a consummate performer across the board. The one-liners squeezed between his more recent material and the music of his Redgum days have become a stand-up act of yarns, anecdotes, ironies and song – a performance of immense attractiveness, innovation and charm.”
